Become a Cognitive Accessibility Advisor

Open employs Advisors to try new products and services developed by other companies.

We want to make these products and services easier to use for people with cognitive disabilities.

People with cognitive disabilities are people who sometimes:

  • Are easily distracted.
  • Forget or lose things.
  • Struggle when there are too many steps to do a task.
  • Have a hard time with conversations.
  • Are diagnosed with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, down syndrome, or traumatic brain injuries.

We are looking for people with cognitive disabilities to be part of our group of Cognitive Accessibility Advisors.

If you want to be a Cognitive Accessibility Advisor, sign up online. If you have questions about becoming an Advisor, read our Frequently Answered Questions below or e-mail us at advisor@openaccessibility.ca

What is a Cognitive Accessibility Advisor?

Nous associons de vrais humains aux capacités cognitives variées à notre équipe d'experts en accessibilité afin de garantir un maximum d'accessibilité, de convivialité et d'inclusion.

Advisors are people with lived experience who work with us.

Advisors help to test the accessibility of products and services.

Advisors give feedback.

Advisors share their lived experience.

How does it work?

You sign up with us to be an Advisor.

We tell you when there is a new opportunity.

You get paid for each project you take part in.

You can ask someone to help you take part. But you don’t have to.

What our Advisors say…

”I really enjoy and believe in the importance of taking part… It’s very rare to get an opportunity to share. I feel like my feedback’s taken seriously.“

~ Stephanie

”Research helps others who are going through the same kind of life as I am. Having people who want to help make their lives better makes me feel heard, valued and understood.“

~ J.N.

”I love my Advisor role. Sure, there are bumpy roads along the way, but overall being an Advisor is something that makes me happy.“

~ Mélanie

We are looking for you.

What do Advisors do?

Advisors can do many tasks for Open.

They can test the accessibility of products and services.

They can also give Open feedback.

Many Advisors worked on different projects with Open.

Some tested new technologies for customers.

Some were also Research Advisors.

They helped make info more accessible.

How does Open work with Advisors in a fair way?

Open pays Advisors for their work.

Advisors can say yes or no to working on a project.

We keep info about Advisors safe and private.

Advisors can agree to share info with some people.

And we only share info with these people.

We can share an Advisor’s info with other organizations. But we keep their name private.

Advisors can give us their permission to show their name in the shared info.

We only ask Advisors for the info we need.

Advisors can refuse to share their info.

Advisors can ask the help of a friend to finish a project.

They can also ask the help of caregivers.

They can also work on the projects alone.

Advisors can stop at any time.

Or they can take a break at any time.

We accommodate all accessibility needs Advisors have.

Accommodations are actions that can help a person.

Why would a person with a cognitive disability want to become an Advisor?

Our Advisors play an important role at Open.

Our Advisors get a chance to share their experiences.

Advisors earn money. We pay Advisors for their time and expertise of lived experience.

The experiences of Advisors can help us to create a more inclusive society.

Their experiences help us to make products and services accessible.

And other people with cognitive disabilities will use these products and services.
